Your inbox has probably begun to fill with holiday party invitations, and while the main point of a party is to do just that – party – you can’t discount the networking opportunity. However, no one wants to be “that person” talking shop when all anyone else wants to do is let loose and have fun.
Here are some tips to help you “talk” about real estate without ever talking about real estate.
- Ask Questions
This is easiest to do with someone you’ve just met. A simple question like “Do you live in the area?” can open the door to so many follow-ups, depending on their answer.
- Listen
This is probably the most important part of the conversation. Genuinely listening allows you to respond sincerely. Make sure you illustrate this sincerity through tone, inflection, nodding your head, etc.
- Read their Cues
Are their arms crossed and stiff, or are they making wide gestures? Are they speaking with their eyes or just their mouth? Don’t underestimate the importance of nonverbal cues. There’s a reason people in the public eye receive professional training on this subject. If you are oblivious to these critical cues, you will blunder every conversation and become “that person.”
- Give and Take
Think of this part as a dance. Some people really love to talk about themselves, so let them take the lead. Don’t interject forcibly – you could kill the conversation or worse, offend them. If you’re having trouble finding an opportunity to contribute, here’s a tip: It’s usually ok to interrupt these self-talkers if you’re asking them for their opinion.
- Have Fun
It is a party, after all. Some of the best Realtors and networking gurus are the absolute life of every event they attend.
