In order to get traffic to your website, you have to do an effective job of marketing it. Most website owners also want steady search engine traffic, which means getting ranked as high as possible in popular search engines like Google. How does this happen? Search engines use algorithms to determine which websites are ranked the highest. What you might not have known is that Facebook does something similar with your content. Facebook uses its own scoring system, called EdgeRank, to decide which posts get the most visibility in your fans’ news feeds.

There are a few simple ways to improve your Facebook EdgeRank:

1. Start with creating posts that include just a little bit more. Basic text posts won’t do very much for your score, but adding photos or videos can provide a definite boost. Next in line for helping your score is adding links. Link to other Facebook pages and outside websites to better your score. And remember that you can add images to a post, even if they are not the focal point of the content. For example, you can include a thumbnail image related to a link you post, and this can help your score.

2. Focus on engagement. The more your fans interact with your posts, the higher you can expect your Facebook EdgeRank to soar. Research the topics that interest your fans the most and track their responses, so you can find out which posts get the most attention. Ask questions to encourage a response to your content, and respond to your fans when they ask questions or post comments. Posts that ask your fans to fill in the blanks encourage interaction as well.

3. Link to your own website and products, but don’t go overboard. Some fans may interact with your page less if your content seems overly promotional.

4. Employ post-targeting. Facebook allows you to sort and categorize your fans based on such factors as gender, age, education, employment and location. Then, you can target your posts to fan subgroups based on their likelihood of interest and interaction. Though post-targeting means you’ll reach fewer fans with each post, those in your subgroups will be more likely to engage with your targeted posts and share your content. Both of these actions can help boost your EdgeRank.
