Making a New Year’s “resolution” has almost become cliché due to the simple fact that most people who make them are unable to meet them. However, the principal in itself is actually a very valuable one if used correctly. So instead of thinking of it as a “resolution”, let’s try calling it what it really is: a goal.
Goal setting is practiced by the most successful individuals in the world. Without goals, we end up drifting through life without any clear direction. Therefore, it’s important to create professional and personal goals alike.
So, let’s get started…
Lifetime Goals aka The Big Picture
This should cover at least the next five years, depending on how ambitious you want to be. To organize what is a relatively broad spectrum, define your goals in the following areas (where applicable):
- Career
- Financial
- Education
- Family
- Artistic
- Attitude
- Physical
- Leisure
- Public Service
Short-term Goals
This is the part where you break down your lifetime goals into smaller fragments. If your lifetime goals cover a 5-year span, this section should cover a 1-year, 6-month, and 1-month plan. Your 1-year career/professional goals should incorporate some sort of business plan.
In theory, the process of goal setting sounds simple but you’ll find the practice to be a bit more challenging. Here’s a mnemonic device to help you when setting your goals:
- S – Specific (or Significant).
- M – Measurable (or Meaningful).
- A – Attainable (or Action-Oriented).
- R – Relevant (or Rewarding).
- T – Time-bound (or Trackable).
Make sure your goals are positive statements starting with “I will…” versus “I won’t…” Then, set priorities based on what’s most important to you. While factoring in the consideration of others may have some value, this is ultimately your plan that you must execute. When you achieve a goal, make a note of it and reward yourself!
